Air India is all set to open a new 55,000 square feet Engineering Warehouse near Delhi International Airport. The facility is expected to be operational next month.

With the new facility the airline hopes to resolve its aircraft maintenance issues to optimize operations.

“An agreement for a new 57,000 sq ft engineering warehouse near Delhi Airport was reached. It aims to be operational next month, giving us more proximate access to and better control over our aircraft spares so we can resolve defects faster,” said Campbell Wilson, CEO, Air India.

Since the takeover by Tata Group the airline has made considerable improvement on timely maintenance of its aircraft. The new facility opening comes on the backdrop of the airline planning to partner with Lufthansa Technic and Air France- KLM to bid for AI Engineering Service (AIESL).

AIESL was initially a part of Air India as its engineering subsidiary, but post privatisation, the MRO remained with the government.

Most of Air India’s engineering needs are fulfilled by AIESL, and experts feel that by acquiring the MRO company, Air India will only stand to benefit.  Singapore Airlines is also expected to join the consortium through SIA Engineering Company Limited.
