US airfares have so far in 2023 been put up by an average of 17% compared to 2022, going by analysis published by CheapAir.com.

The year-on-year assessment of 128 million US airfares showed no city was “spared from higher flight prices”, according to CheapAir.com, with smaller cities more likely to see bigger price hikes.

“This is likely due to the fact that smaller airports offer fewer flights on fewer airlines compared to larger cities”, CheapAir.com CheapAir.com said.

The biggest rise was seen in Flint, Michigan , with fares costing 35% more than in 2022, Akron and Dayton in Ohio were second and third with 32% and 30% rises. Miami and Minneapolis were among the top ten, with 23% and 22% fare increases.

The best performers were Manchester, Oakland, Houston, Rochester and Hartford, where the increases were kept to between 10-11%.
