New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport recently opened its fourth runway marking Delhi as the first in India to have four runways. An Air India flight was offered ceremonial water canon salute while an IndiGo Airbus A320, carrying inspectors and officials, was the runway’s first operator.
IndiGo’s 14,000 scheduled monthly movements will be supported by the new runway and elevated taxiways.
Apart from the runway a new elevated taxiway was also inaugurated which will lead to significant reduction in time from the runway to gate cutting the journey by approximately 7km and the fuel burn by 350kg per flight. Accordingly, roughly 55,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions will be reduced annually.
