Lufthansa Technik has announced the signing of “two major contracts” with Emirates for the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of its Airbus A380 fleet.

Lufthansa Technik will overhaul the main landing gears of the aircraft and will provide the airline with “highly flexible extra capacity” for base maintenance such as c-checks, the first time the carrier has outsourced such work from its in-house maintenance team.

Landing gear overhaul to be done at Lufthansa Technik’s UK workshop while the base maintenance services are to be carried out in Manila, where the first Emirates A380 arrived in January 2023.

Lufthansa Technik has pumped a “medium seven digit figure” into upgrading its services due to growing demand for MRO work on A380s.

“With most airlines now having left the Covid crisis behind and air travel demand skyrocketing, passenger capacity is needed more than
ever, and this positively affects MRO demand for the A380. The happier we are to not only bring our existing and well-proven capabilities for this aircraft type to market, but also to invest in building up additional capabilities such as the third A380 overhaul line in Manila,” said Kai-Stefan Roepke, vice president corporate sales Europe, Middle East and Africa at Lufthansa Technik.
