The flights in Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York, and Atlanta are severely affected due to thunderstorm and bad weather forcing the airports in the region to halt most of the incoming flights. Besides the issues with communication systems in the Washington DC have forced additional flights to be grounded. The main issue was found in the Potomac Terminal Radar Approach Control facility, which was forced to switch to a backup system.

The Federal Aviation Association (FAA) issued ground stops to a large amount of East Coast airports in the United States at around 20:00 Eastern Standard Time

At this time, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) still had active ground stops issued, specifically due to thunderstorms.

Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Miami International Airport (MIA) were affected by ground delays. About, 41% of flights departing from Newark and 50% of flights departing LaGuardia were delayed.

Additionally, 32% of flights arriving to Newark were delayed, and 15% of flights headed to LaGuardia were delayed. Newark was dealing with a departure delay of over 30 minutes yet still dealing with an arrival delay of 60 minutes at 20:00 EST. LaGuardia was only dealing with a departure delay of 30 minutes at this time.

United Airlines was most affected in the region, with over 1035 flights delayed. This is 36% of its flights. Republic Airlines, which operates service as American Eagle, Delta Connection, and United Express, saw over 30% of its flights delayed and 18% of its flights get canceled. JetBlue saw the largest percentage of its flights get delayed, where over 50% of its flights were delayed. This is 531 of the airline’s flights.
