Global air cargo volumes have “partially bounced back” after a May 1 holiday dip, according to statistics collated by WorldACD Market Data.

Figures for the second week of May showed an increase of 7% in tonnages and 1% in average global air cargo prices.

Despite the week-on-week rebound, tonnages dropped year-on-year, while the two weeks around the May 1 holiday“showed a downward trend in tonnages”, with demand down 14% ex-Latin America, 11% in Europe and 9% in the Asia-Pacific.The fall in the Americas “at least partly reflects subsiding volumes of flower shipments as these return to more normal levels following a surge ahead of Mother’s Day celebrations in several countries”, WorldACD said.

The first half of May saw year-on-year volumes down 8% worldwide, with North America down 22%, Europe 16% but the Middle East and South Asia up 11%.
