In its newly-released global air cargo outlook, Boeing is forecasting that air cargo traffic will double by 2041.

According to the jet manufacturer’s 2022 World Air Cargo Forecast, the global freighter fleet will expand by over 60% over the two decades, with “strong demand for new production” as well as converted freighters.

Around 40% of the demand will be in the Asia-Pacific region, Boeing said, with a total of 2,800 new or converted freight aircraft needed over the time.

“While the air cargo market is returning to a more normal pace after historic demand in the last two years, structural factors including express network growth, evolving supply chain strategies and new cargo-market entrants are driving sustained freighter demand,” said Darren Hulst, Boeing vice president of commercial marketing.
